Hi Patrick,

Yes, I have Alfred's (not Albert) birth cert. Problem is he was born illegitimately so no fathers name. Harriet was living in the workhouse at the time so her address is simply, "Workhouse, Chatham" so no clues as to her family.

The only Harriet Wale of about the right age & unmarried (she could have married after Alfred's birth of course) on the 1881 census in Southern England I found was this one living in Mile End Old Town, London, Middlesex, England

Harriet WALE       U 60 F Born: West Dean, Sussex

I don't have any other info on her, no idea where she was from or living before this.

Alfred went into the army & married a Scottish lady named Flora McKenzie born in Inverness. Found him aged 29 in the 1871 census with the army in Hartley Wintney, Farnborough, he was with the "Highlanders 91", so that may indicate he was Scottish.

Thanks for your interest
