Morning Fiona
I live in the Kindom of FIFE, so a fair-few miles north.
My lady-wife is from Neath in South Wales, hence my interest in Wales.
COUSINS is basically an English and/or French name.
For distribution in the UK-

There is a surprising quantity of COUSINS in Glamorgan (W,S,E); and in Monmouth (now Gwent).

=====================================
The view today southwards is definitely pleasant; but in the period concerned, there would have been a large tip or bing on the hillside, to the left/east, dominating the outlook.
Many of those industrial sites have been landscaped in the past 40 years; and today give no idea of what they were like around 1900.
There is a similar, much larger site near me. When we first moved to Fife, about 44 years back, it could have substituted for the surface of the Moon or Mars.
One bing was notorious in that the small coal residue in it, caught fire many years back and could look like a mini-volcano.
When that bing was demolished, at night it was like lava rolling down it. During the day, the large bulldozers simply "disappeared" in the clouds of dust, smoke and water vapour. The material was pushed down in to small "natural" ponds.
Today, it is a country park with loch, sites of scientific interest, play areas, "beach", fishing, nature trails, horse-riding etc.
