Hi Carol,
I'm a descendant of Mathew, through my mother, nee Nancy Erin Waldrop.
I'd love to hear more about the Michael in Luke's household in Virginia. Which Luke? Which year? And the source?
Somewhere on paper, my family has copies of land records that placed a Michael Waldrop in South Carolina by 1765. I believe it was a copy of a map of land claims, but can try to dig it up to be more accurate.
Further, there were Wardropes, Waldrips, etc., filtering in to the South early through Charleston, S.C., and into Georgia as early as 1735. My family has puzzled over Mathew's parents for quite awhile, but no one has felt absolutely sure about assigning him to James or Michael quite yet.
I love that people continue to search. There are days I'm convinced Mathew just sprang up from the red clay, and his parents will never be documented.
