Walden and Gammill, TN and IL

Trying to sort out some data and find the missing pieces of the Walden family puzzle. Here is what is known:
Margaret Gammill is the daughter of William James and Anne McGaughey Gammill. She married 1st ? Walden in TN (probably Rutherford County), abt 1825. Abt 1848, Margaret married 2nd James Crawford in Coles IL. They remained there the rest of their lives.

Back to ? Walden: He was supposedly born in TN. One source says his first name was James and another says John. I have checked the 1830 census in TN but there is no James Walden (or variant) present in 1830 and the John Walden that is in Rutherford that year does not fit this family. No further data about ? Walden has been found.

He and Margaret had four children and possibly a fifth before Mr. Walden expired or otherwise disappeared.
My only source of info so far about Mr. Walden is the obit for one of his daughters, Sarah G. Walden. Here is the scant mention of Sarah's father and mother: "Sarah G. Walden was born in Tennessee, Sept 16th 1837, where her father died, but removed to Coles County Illinois with her mother in her second year, and there spent the remainder of her childhood days."

Margaret Gammill Walden had a total of four children by Mr. Walden while in TN. Along with Sarah was: James P., b. 1825, Mary Ellen b. 1828, and Eliza b. 1830. She left TN 1838 and is found in Coles Co. IL in the 1840 census. After arriving in IL, another daughter, Catherine, was born to Margaret in 1839. There seems to be some conflict about who Catherine's father was. One source says that she is a Crawford, but it appears that Margaret and James Crawford married much later. Their "only" daughter, according to one source, wasn't born until 1849. (I don't have a marriage date for the Crawfords, but I'm guessing it was well after 1840.) But I haven't seen Catherine listed with the other Walden children except on the 1840 census.

I'm also wondering why a recently widowed woman with five kids under 15 would leave her home and relatives in Rutherford TN to carve out a niche for herself in a new location. I thought perhaps there were Gammills close by in Coles IL, but none seem to be neighbors. Here is the list of Gammills and variants in the IL 1840 census:
Thomas Gamel in Clark IL
Andrew Gammill in Shelby IL (probably Margaret's brother)
Boswell Ganill in Jasper IL
Jushua S Ganill in Jasper IL
J T Gunnell in McLean IL
Samuel Gunnill in Morgan IL

So, that is my data. Would love some help in finding the real Mr. Walden. Would like to know what happened to Sarah's siblings, in the hope that one of them might have a more generous helping of data in their obit. Would like to know where and when Mr. Walden and Margaret married and what happened to Mr. Walden, when and where he died and where he is buried.

Thanks for reading all this, and for your help.
Jan
