WAITMAN Furbay

For over 35 years I have been looking for the parents & siblings of my ggg grandfather, with little success. Someone suggested that I look for his given name as a surname. Waitman was born in DE in 1762/3, lived in Frederick Co. VA in the late 1700's to abt. 1815, then moved to Harrison Co. OH about 1817. He died there in 1857. His wife was Jane/Janet Luke. Any help would be appreciated. Does anyone know where the name came from or what it means? I have seen it several other times as a given name. It is sometimes spelled Wateman. Thanks!
