Larry, I believe I may have solved the dilemma of Esther Waite's parentage, at least circumstantially. I believe Esther to be the brother of James Waite, who acquired land in 1752 at Stover's Mill Creek. We know that James Waite (b. 3 Sept. 1732, Middlesex County, VA, d. bef. 20 Sept. 1781, Augusta County, VA) married Catherine Taylor (b. bef. 1735, d. aft. 9 Oct. 1771), daughter of Isaac Taylor and Isabel Wilson.
James Waite in his will writes:
Vol. 2 - Page 417--Will of James Waits dated 9th October, 1771. Wife, Catherine; devisees, John Taylor's (and Esther, his wife) children, among them Sarah and Catherine. Recorded in Rockingham, 20th September, 1781.
Some have reached the conclusion that Esther was James Wait's daughter. I believe if you look at the dates, Esther (John Taylor's wife) could only have been James Waite's SISTER, as she was born abt. 1735-1737 (she was married to John Taylor abt. 1755.
Also, in John Taylor's will of 1772, he names his (probable) brother-in-law, James Waite in his will, as follows:
Page 580.--6th May, 1772. John Taylor's will--To wife, Esther, executrix; to eleven children; to son, John, £5 more than the others. Teste: Archibald Huston, James Waite, John Stephenson. Proved, 18th August, 1772, by Waite and Huston. Esther qualifies (her mark) with James Waite, Archd. Huston.
Note: the Archibald Huston listed in John Taylor's will, married Mary Stephenson, daughter of John Stephenson and Sarah Waite (who I believe may have been an aunt of James Waite) - additional research on this possible relationship will be necessary.
