The surname Waight, (spelt that way) does not appear to be a very common name in England.

My Waight family all lived in and around Greenwich, Chelsea areas of London, Middlesex, England and were all Lightermen, Watermen, Mariners and a Bar Shopkeeper etc.

My gt-grandmother Sarah Annie Elizabeth PHASEY was married to Joseph Ernest WAIGHT. It was a second marriage for both of them. Sarah's daughter from her first marriage was my grandmother, Iris Mary b. 1905 and was always known as Iris Mary WAIGHT. Her biological father Patrick Percival Cavanagh BRADY had died just before her birth at a very young age of Tuberculosis. Iris Mary was born and raised as Iris Mary WAIGHT, knowing only Joseph Ernest WAIGHT to be her father.

Joseph Ernest WAIGHT b. abt 1868 was a Tug Boat Master on the River Thames. He died 27.12.1927 at Seamens Hospital, Greenwich,London age 59 years. Their residence just prior to his death was 119 Cumberland Road, Plaistow, West Ham, Essex, England. Joseph and other family members also lived in Charlton, East Greenwich, London, England for many years.

Joseph Ernest WAIGHT B. 1868 Chelsea, London was the son of Edwin J. WAIGHT (56) b. Hertfordbury, Hertford,Married, Bar Shopkeeper Out of Business in 1881, who resided with his family at 7 Lidford Terrace, Lots Rd, Chelsea, London in 1881 as follows:

Elizabeth WAIGHT (54) b. St. Martins, Middlesex was his wife.

The children living with them in 1881 were:

William H. WAIGHT (26) b. Chelsea, London, Unmarried, Lighterman.

Robert E. WAIGHT (25) b. Chelsea, London, Unmarried, Lighterman.

Emily Caroline WAIGHT (20) b. Dec Qtr. of 1860 in Chelsea, London, Unmarried, Machinist. She married in Dec Qtr. of 1881 in Chelsea.

Amelia S. WAIGHT (17) b. Chelsea, London, Unmarried, Machinist.

Joseph E. WAIGHT (13) b. Chelsea, London, Unmarried, Scholar.

Joseph Ernest WAIGHT was first married to Emily (b. abt 1870 Bermondsey, London. In 1901 Joseph Ernest Waight was employed as a Lighterman and they were living in Charlton, East Greenwich, London with two of their children as follows: Alfred (2) b. Charlton, East Greenwich, London and Alice (9) b. Charlton, East Greenwich, London. Joseph and Emily were the parents of the following three children:

3. Alfred William WAIGHT born 7 April 1899 Greenwich, London.

1. Alice Emily WAIGHT born 15 July 1892 in Charlton, Greenwich, London.

2. Joseph Charles WAIGHT born 19 Nov 1894 in Greenwich, London.

Would love to hear from anyone with WAIGHT ancestors who may be connected to the abovementioned families or who may have any information about them.
