Seeking background on Rachel Elizabeth Wagoner (Wagner, Waggoner) who married Joseph Samuel Lewis in Audrain County, Missouri on 25 December 1869. Family records say Rachel was born in Virginia, 5 November 1845. I have lots of information on Joseph, but nothing confirmed for Rachel prior to their marriage.
They are in the 1870 census in Missouri as newlyweds but a three-year-old girl named Mary is with them and Joseph, having just left his father's nearby farm, is shown as owning $3000 in property. (Actually Joseph is listed twice in this census, once with Rachel and once with father William Lewis.)
I can't find Rachel prior to their marriage, and wonder if the child, the property, and her age (23 per the census, more likely 24) might suggest she was a widow.
Joseph's family had recently moved to Missouri from Jersey County, Illinois, so he may have known Rachel there.
Joseph and Rachel moved around Missouri for several years, then gathered up the kids to travel by horseback to Elsinore, California where they took up a homestead sometime between 1883 and 1888.
Any clues on Rachel would be appreciated.
