Julie, I will add a little more about the family of Richard and Sarah Chappell Wade. There have been Wades in Halifax Co. since the beginning of the county. After Richard and Sarah were first married in 1806, they lived on the "McPhaillie" plantation north of the Dan River.I don't know when they moved to the Cluster Springs area. They had 9 children, Wm. Henry, the oldest, and John Dickie (mine) were millwrights and moved to south central TN & north central AL where they built mills and many bridges and had large farms.Mary Ann Wade Moore also went to TN, Sarah Virginia Wade Warren moved to KY, George Ellis Wade and Fanny Wade Oliver went to MO and Richard A. Wade III went to TX sometime after the Civil War.Amanda Wade Adams remained in Halifax Co and I think Susan Wade Stanford did too.I feel sure there was originally a free-standing kitchen behind the house, however the original fireplaces in the house were reputed to be much larger than they are now, and were likely used for cooking as well early on.
When I was in Halifax Co. in 1996/7 I was told an elderly Mr. Adams was still alive, but he refused to talk to me then. The Mrs. McCoy, who then owned the house, said some of the area's black families' older members still told tales about the Wades.
If you have other questions, let me know.
