Unfortunatley I have no proof, nor can I recall where I read or heard about this, but some time ago I learned that the surname Wade is in fact Nordic and means 'Dweller on the shore of a Ffjord".If this is true then it was probably adopted into the English Language when England/Scotland were under attach from the Vikings.
As I say, I have no proof but perhaps it presents you with a further avenue of investigation.
