In 1848 Richard Waddington of Wellingborough married Beulah Cowper. It was quite a common practice in those days to give children as on of their first names the surname of their mother and the name then often continues down the family. Both my brother and my uncles have names with this derivation.
This practice was particularly strong in Richard's family. His sons were Benjamin Cowper W, James Cowper W, Richard W, Jesse Cowper W, Richard W, and Thomas Cowper W. I wonder whether there was something wrong with Richard!

Benjamin Cowper W had 5 sons: George Cowper W, Harry Richmond W, Ben Cowper W, Frederick William W and Herbert W.

James Cowper W had 4 sons: Jesse James W, Richard W, James Thomas Cowper W and George W.

James Thomas Cowper W had one son Thomas W.

If your family tradition is correct Beulah will have been a relative of William Cowper.
