Daily News, The (Longview, WA) - Tuesday, February 5, 2002

Donald James Cottonware, 70, of Kelso, died Feb. 3, 2002, at home in his favorite chair surrounded by family.

He was born Dec. 23, 1931, in Bandon, Ore., to Otis and Ada (Abott) Cottonware and lived most of his life in Cowlitz County. He married his wife, Sharon, on June 19, 1956 in Kelso.

Mr. Cottonware served three years in the Army and retired from the Department of Natural Resources. He was an elder of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and served on its tribal council. His deepest desire was realized when the federal government recognized the tribe last month. He enjoyed drumming and the native stick game, fishing, playing bingo, taking trips to Reno, being at family gatherings and watching his grandchildren play sports. He was known as Grandpa Okie-dokie to his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, at home; two sons, Randy Cottonware of Shelton, Wash., and Donald Cottonware II of Hunt, Texas; a daughter, Molly Brekke of Longview; a brother, David Cottonware of Portland; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A brother, Ted Cottonware, preceded him in death.

A private family service will be held. A gathering of friends and the Cowlitz people to honor his life will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632.

Columbia Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
