Deceased Name: ELDER, ROBERT L.
Dec. 8, 1924 to March 13, 2006 "Bob" was born on December 8, 1924, and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He played in big dance bands as a teenager. He joined the Navy in 1943 during World War II, serving in the Pacific as a SeaBee, Gunner's Mate 2nd Class. Bob was discharged in 1946, and recalled for the Korean War in 1950. He was honorably discharged in 1953. From 1953 to 1988 he worked for SDG&E, Site Tool, Ryan Aero, Rohr, Boeing, North American Rockwell, and Sikorsky Helicopter. In 1945 he joined the John Rodgers' VFW Post in Honolulu. Bob was an active member of VFW Post 3787 in San Diego. He was also a member (since 1969) of the Masonic - Blue Lodge St Andrews Lodge #35 degree, Master Mason, Renton WA; and Scottish Rite of Seattle Valley (Orient of WA), 32 degree. From 1969 to 1977 he was a member of the Shrine-Nile Temple in Seattle. 1977 to 1979 - Al Malaikah Shrine Temple in Los Angeles. In 1979 he joined the Al Bahr Shrine Temple in San Diego, CA, and was active in the Sons of the Desert (Sec), Antique Car Club, and Al Bahr Samaritan Hospital Shrine volunteer driver. In 1954 he became a member of the Elks Lodge Post # 1812 in El Cajon. He was a NRA Life Member and competed in handgun matches shooting as a member of the Naval pistol clubs. Bob was also an instructor and member of the San Diego Fly Fishing club. Bob passed away after a brief battle with lung cancer and pneumonia on March 13, 2006, at Kaiser Hospital with his beloved Ginger and her sons by his side. Bob is remembered as a patient, understanding friend to all and a good listener. He is especially missed by his adoring love Ginger, and her five sons, and four grandchildren, his sisters Geri and Shirley and all those that he shared his time with at VFW 3787, Al Bahr Shrine Temple in San Diego and Elks Lodge # 168. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, April 9, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #168, 7430 Jackson Dr. San Diego. He will be interred with full military honors at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11, 2006. Final memorial service will be held following the interment at VFW 3787, 4370 Twain Ave., San Diego. Please sign the guest book at

Robert L. Elder, 81, of San Diego died March 13. He was born in Indianapolis and served in the Navy Seabees during World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of VFW Post 1945 and Elks Lodge 1954.

Survivors include his companion, Ginger; stepsons, Ronald, Michael and Scott Shutters, Cesar Vasquez and Aldo Broussard; sisters, Jeri Reed of Texas and Shirley Culver of Indiana; and four grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. today, with military honors, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma.

Inurnment: after services, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Donations: Mission Valley VFW Post 3787 Cancer Fund, 4370 Twain Ave., San Diego, CA 92120.

Arrangements: American Cremation Service.
