Archibald Galloway (1820-1887) of Coos County, Oregon in 1880

Archibald Galloway, born about 1820, Scotland, parents born Scotland, appears in only the 1880 Oregon census (1) but the birthplaces for the children suggest the family was in Oregon in 1870. He is apparently the Archie Galloway who died in Marshfield, Oregon September 1887, age 67 (6). His wife is Mary A., born about 1821, also Scotland (1). They have 6 children in 1880:

.....1 James Galloway, born December (3) 1854 (1,3) in Chili (1,10), South America (1,2,10), a logger in 1900 (3) apparently married but wife not listed or obvious in the Washington census. He might be the one in the Odd Fellows Home of California in Santa Clara, 1920 who arrived in the US 1854 and was naturalized 1875 (10). A James died about 31 July 1939 (7) and might be this individual.

.....2 Margaret Galloway, born about 1864 in British Columbia (1).

...*.3 William Galloway, born October 1867 (4) or about 1868 in Oregon (1,4,9), a coal miner (4).

.....4 Archibald Galloway, born February 1872 (2) or about 1873, Oregon (1,8), a single coal miner in 1900 (2), living with his brother, William, in Cle Elum, Kittitas County, Washington in 1920 (8), possibly the one who died 16 April 1857 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington (5).

.....5 Isabella Galloway, born about 1875, Oregon (1).
Comments: Possibly the family was on its way by ship to the Pacific Coast in 1854 when James was born in Chili in 1854 (1,3,10). By 1864, they apparently were in British Columbia (1) but returned to Oregon soon after. They were not located in the 1870 census index but had another child in 1872 reportedly born in Oregon (1).

********** Second Generation **********

William J. Galloway, apparently the son of Archibald Galloway and Mary A. (1), was born October 1867 (2) or about 1868 (1,6) in Oregon (1,2,6), parents born Scotland (2). A William Thomas Galloway,
age 60, died 9 July 1828? in Kittitas County, Washington (9) and would seem to be this individual except for the middle name. Also, a William J. Galloway died in Portland, Oregon, 28 July 1927 (10, this might be the date of a newspaper reporting an earlier death). He was married about 4 May 1889 apparently in Roslyn, Kittitas County, Washington to Sarah Jane REESE (3), born June (2) 1870 California (2,6), parents born Wales (2). She probably is the daughter of David REES, born January 1840 in Wales and Jane, born April 1840 Wales (4). A Sarah J. Galloway, age 92 and resident of Kittitas County, died in Seattle 8 May 1963 (9).
Children: In 1900, they had 5 children with only 4 alive.

.....1 William Galloway, born December 1891 Washington (2), is probably the Wm. Rees Galloway, age 47, who died 5 May 1939 Kittitas County, Washington (5). This William could not be positively identified in the 1920 census. Possibly he is the William, born about 1891 in Washington, who is married to Julia, born about 1874 in Minnesota. In 1920, they are living in Hillyard, Spokane County, Washington (8), A Julia, born about 1872, died in Spokane 7 February 1949 (9).

.....2 Irene Galloway, born January 1894 Washington (2).

.....3 Mamie Galloway, born August 1897 Montana (2).

.....4 Jane Galloway, born November 1899 Washington (2).

.....5 Earl Galloway, born 1902 Washington (6).

.....6 Clyde Galloway, born 1908, Washington (6), possibly the one born 10 September 1908, died 3 February 1988 in Washington (7).
Comments: William was a coal miner (2) and apparently also lived in Montana for a short time about 1897 (2).
