Bremerton Puget Sound Shipyard Question

My gg grandfather Halvor (aka Howard Vettleson) is listed as a driller at the naval shipyard there and I am wondering what kind of job was that back in the 1920-1930's era? Did most of the employees live right there in some type of Govt housing? Can anyone shed some light on what life was like in the 1920-30's in the Bremerton/Port Orchard area, please write back thanks
