Elisha and Hepzibah Gilbert
Brainard, Gilbert and Torrey, in The Gilbert Family (1953), gave the marriage of Elisha Gilbert to Hepzibah (--?--),14 Jan 1776 in Middletown, Rutland County, Vermont. That town was chartered on 28 Oct 1784. Fifty years after that book, Elisha’s wife’s origin remains unknown. Children’s births were recorded at Middletown, but was this the location of the actual marriage? Elisha was born in Brookfield, Massachusetts, 29 Sep 1752. The family was listed as “of Ware” at least through 1771. Brothers and father moved to Partridgeville [now Peru], Berkshire County, Massachusetts, after 1777. Elisha is listed as one of the Green Mountain Boys, in May 1775. It is not known if he was in Vermont before this, or belonged to a Massachusetts unit that joined Ethan Allen 3 May 1775. Did Elisha marry Hepzibah in Brookfield, Ware, Berkshire County, Pawlet, Poultney, Middletown, or on route somehwere? Do you have a Hepzibah in your family in these areas? Elisha’s family resided close to Abel White, Reuben Searl/Searle/Searls, George Goodhue and Abel Cleveland in three states, over a period of many years. He had in-laws Mary Dunbar, Dorcas Ballou, Nathan Abbot, David Marvel, Joseph Conley. Who was Hepzibah?
