The route would depend from where in Vermont and to where in Canada. Many families who lived in the northern section of Vermont settled over the border for a generation or two. The border was not so much of an issue then. But most of the families eventually moved back to this side of the border.

Why? My understanding is that most really did not view it as moving to Canada . . . it was more like a continued movement outward settling the land. Compared with northern Vermont, the land just over the border is a bit less mountainous and easier to farm.

All I know about Canadian records is that they are done differently than Vermont records. And that most of what you would probably be seeking is not online.
