C.W. Sturdevant ,a prominent agriculturist of Jefferson Township is a native of the State of Vermont, born in 1842. his parents , are Jay and Lucinda (Webster) Sturtevant, were also natives of the Green Mountain State, as were their ancestors for three generations previous.The father was a farmer by occupation & in 1854 he removed to the West,locating at Elgin,Illinois, where he remained one year, at he end of 12 months he purchased a farm near Dundee ,Illinois, which he improved and made his home for seven years: he than sold this property and removed to Monroe County,Wisconsin where he purchased 160 acres of land in Portland township; here he established a home in which he passed the remaider of his life, his death occurring in 1870. at the age of 55 years, his widow survives him , and resides on the farm of their son C.W.Sturtevant, she is 72 years of age. our subject is the second of a family of 8 children who grew to maturity: he was reared to the life of the farmer, gaining his education in the short winter terms of the district school. At the age of 21 years he left the parental roof and started out in life to meet its responsibilities alone. C.W. rented land which he cultivated one year, and than in 1864 he enlisted in the union Army joining the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He participated in all engagements of his regiment, and was present at the surrender of Geral Lee in 1865. After he was mustered out of the service and had received an honorable discharge, he returned to his home in Portland Towship until 1884.He than sold his land and purchased 160 acres int he Town of Jefferson Sec 7, which he developed into one of the most desireable farms in the county; he has erected a neat and attractive dwelling has large and convenient barns and many of the comforts of the century; the land is well watered by a running stream and is well stocked by high-grade animals.
Mr. Sturtevant was married January 6, 1866 to Miss Libbie Phillips, a daughter of John and Charlotte Phillips; the father died in 1885, aged 60 years; the mother is still a resident of LaCrosse aged seventy-eight years. Mr. and Mrs.Sturtevant have had born to them 4 children. Charles who is now renting his father's farm; Barton is a mechanic: Nettie is a successful teacher, and Thomas is also a teacher.
Summarizing a bit Mr. Sturtevant was a good ciitizen of Portland Township. He acted as treasurer. Also was a member of the GAR and took a great interest in that organization.
