If your searching in Bennington County I may be able to offer direction. You are correct in that it is difficult at best to get any information on Vermont, without having to pay subscription fees to places like Ancestry.com. A lot of the Benn. Co. records are stored at the Museum which charges a fee to access personally and is so understaffed that it is difficult to get to queries promptly. There is a website for Pownal in Benn. Co. at www.pownal.org which is a work in progress, and appreciates any information on this area that you can provide to assist them in getting the information out to searchers like us. I may have missed the original post on this subject so please forgive me, if I am repeating anything. I have a CD on the History of Benn. Co. if that is your area, send me more information and maybe I can help. There are census records available @ http://www.rays-place.com/census/bennington-cty-vt.htmhttp://www.rays-place.com/census/bennington-cty-vt.htm. and the Russell Vermontiana Collection is very helpful. I had the opportunity to visit in person so I don't know how they are via mail. Also Sandgate had a wealth of information available. They sent me copies at a very reasonable fee. Try these sites: http://www.marthacanfieldlibrary.org/russell/home.htmlhttp://www.marthacanfieldlibrary.org/russell/home.html & www.sandgatevermont.com
I too find it frustrating that so little is published on the web
