James M. Steele b 1838 Rockingham, Windham, Vermont

I am trying to find who the father of James M. Steele b1838 in Rockingham, Windham, Vermont is. I can trace him back as far as the 1850 census, at that time he was 12 years old and living with a family named Davis (Marshall and Rebecca). I don't know why he was living there and I cannot find anything prior to that. I hope somone can be of some assistance. This would give me the link I need to connect to my present family.
