Paul, Thank you for your response.

James the gardener is the father of the James that married Bessie. I can't explain why only children Mary & Katie appear in the 1889 directory but in the 1900 census the family appears at 7 Spruce Street, St Johnsbury, Enumeration district 54, pg 206 with the following:
James Flynn (3/1851 Ire) gardner; wife Helen (3/1853 Ire), children: Katherine E., daughter, (10/1876, VT), Mary A.daughter, (2/1880 VT), John F ,son, (1/1882), & James E., son, (4/1883, VT).
