Robert,

My 3rd Gr.grandmother was an Elwell we think from Shaftsbury? We think as my mother has mentioned to me that her father was Thomas Elwell and is full or part Am. Indian. This is the information I have on her. She was Elizabeth Elwell born 6/12/1819 and she died 12/30/1881 & buried at Shaftsbury Center Cemetary near the Baptist Church.
She was married in Shaftsbury on 3/6/1836 to Abel G.Cary whom was born 6/11/1815 in Clarksburg,VT. (but mom`s cousin says Massachusetts. Abel died 1/15/1893.
We are told that the Elwells are from Shaftsbury, VT. and that they are of American Indian decent!

I hope this helps you and if I may ask, if you wouldn`t mind emailing me any information you may find before I do , that is if you believe you have the same Thomas which I have just begun looking for and even if not, just let me know if your getting any where on your search! I wish you the best!
But definitley look in Shaftsbury, VT., you should find family there. Ours(their son- George Carey(Cary)had a Knife factory in Chiselville, VT. Please email also if you need more information and I`ll do my best to see what I can find out!

Sincerly,
Barb(Elwell family decent)
