Jumping in kind of late... anyone with anything to add/clarify any of this would be appreciated.
From letters handed down through my husband's family, written 1799 through 1818, I have been working on a genealogy mystery. Letters to sisters Rachel and Chloe Allis from Guilford, CT, later Widow Chloe Payne and Mrs Abraham Burwill. Letters are to Great Flats, ?? (should be NY but is illegible), Elizabethtown and Keene, NY and Addison, VT. Chloe left home for "one she knew not" and her "behaviour caused such talk".....???
A brief sketch, not all dates included:
Nathaniel Allis m1 Hannah Norton (m. in 1766 Guilford, CT)
Children-all born Guilford:
Rachel b 1767 m1 Wm Allis; m2 Abraham Burwill
Chloe b1773 m1 Benjamin Payne (1st settler to stay- Keene,NY) m2 ?? McLea
Chloe Allis m. Benjamin Payne
Betsey b. abt 1798(1st baby born in Keene,NY) d 1 Mar 1819 bur. Chimney Point
Amanda b. abt 1800 d. 5 Jul 1819 bur. Chimney Point
Urania b. abt 1802 m. Phineas Bushnell Norton (son of Bela and Lydia (Bushnell) Norton d.?? before 1850
Jemima b. abt 1803/4 d. 6 Jan 1819 bur. Chimney Point
Urania married her 2nd cousin Phineas (b. Addison??)
Chloe was widowed by 1805 but apparently didn't remarry until after 1812 at least, possibly later. her sister Rachel was living in Addison. There are a couple of McLeans in Addison early census.
There is a Benjamin Paine mentioned in the early formation of Addison, VT, settling near Chimney Point, I've seen a reference that he married Jemima Lewis (of CT). My suspicion is that this Benj and Jemima were my Benj.'s parents.
The 3 Payne girls buried near Chimney Point are more likely the granddaughters of the Benjamin Payne who owned the land there. Chloe Mclean was their mother.
If there is more info on the Benj Payne of Chimney Point at all I'd love to have it, and share what I've got.
