Anne, glad to help! Since making this discovery on Friday, a whole new world has openned up for me!
From a letter sent from my distant cousin to my mother, dated Dec 21, 1989: [notes from me]
"I used to know how you and I were related, but can't remember anymore. Albert Jacobs [my maternal grandfather] was one of the names signed on your card. Would that be a son or grandson of Carroll Jacobs [Albert's father] who was a brother of Mom's [Cynthia Jacobs] mother [Beulah Stowe Varney] Beulah Stowe Varney Jacobs? The only ones of grandma's relatives from the East [Beulah and Cynthia relocated to Livingston County, IL] that I have met are Uncle Will Turner. His wife (deceased) was Aunt Carrie Varney."
Re-reading this letter makes me so sad. Betty is still alive, but now in a nursing home. My mother passed away in 1991. When I talked with Betty's husband he kept mentioning a "Jacob Varney" but I don't have any additional information. I will continue looking. I am tempted to get on a plane and visit Odell, Illinois! I will be going to Boston this summer and will make a point of driving up to Vermont to do some research. Seems like such a long wait!
