Artie, In the ship records you mentioned, was the child Obediah Vowell or any child listed with Jacob Vowell or John Vowell?
I see a problem in your discussion about John Vowell. You say he drowned in 1804, and you also say he was listed in 1810 as a merchant with Vowell & Briggs.
A book, History and Genealogies of Old Granville County, North Carolina, 1746-1800, by Thomas McAdory Owen, Montgomery, AL, 1900, section titled, "Orphans in the County," page 194, has the following entry:
"May 9, 1776.Obediah Vowel, aged 8 yrs April 7, 1776, bound to Ellis Drewry to become "planter"; no other descrip'n."
This indicates Obediah Vowel was born Apr. 7, 1768.I don't know where he was born. Most early residents of Granville Co., NC, migrated from Virginia.
One genealogist who tried to help me find information about Obediah Vowell told me that in that time period, a child did not actually have to be an orphan to be bound to an adult.Perhaps the father had died and the mother could not support the child.Or, sometimes a very poor couple would have their child or children bound out to another adult in order for the child or children to have a better way of life.
A book, Abstracts of Granville County, N.C., by Zae Gwynn, 1973, has the following entry:
“Book 1?, Page 66.
“233,234-Jan. 17, 1779-May Court 1779-Will of Ellis Drewry - to wife Amey, 10 shillings; to son William Drewry, whom I appoint executor, all my lands and slaves, after my debts paid.Exrs: Robert Crawley and George Terry of Mecklenburg Co., VA, son Wm. Drewry – and added below is this: I promise when Obey Vowel comes to age 21 he shall receive 100 pds. legacy from my estate.Wts: John Gwinn, John Harris, Joseph Langston, John Landers.”
When Ellis Drewry died, Obey Vowel must have been about 10 or 11 years old.Mecklenburg Co., VA, was and is adjacent to Granville Co., NC.
Obediah Vowel and Rachel Frazier married Sep. 6, 1786, in Granville Co., NC.Also on the marriage record are the names John Tindal, probably bondsman, and Robert Searcy, witness. At the time of their marriage, Obediah Vowell must have been 18 years old, and Rachel Frazier must have been about 16 years old.
Other researchers think Obediah Vowell had another wife, first name unknown, last name Congo or Conger, who was one-half Cherokee Indian.I don't know what happened to Rachel (Frazier) Vowell or when Obediah married the 2nd wife.
I couldn't find Obediah Vowell on the 1790 Census. As you say, he was enumerated on the 1800 Census of Greenville Co., SC.I couldn't find him on the 1810 Census, but he was on the 1820 Census of Pendleton Co., SC.I couldn't find him on the 1830 Census, so I suspect he died between 1820 and 1830.
