Hi Byron,
I haven't a clue as to the parents of Elizabeth VOWELL.In counties surrounding Guilford and records in those counties, there seem to have been families with possible spelling variations of the name VOWELL -- VOILS, VOYLES, etc., but I'm not sure of any connection. There was a record of military service for a William VOWELL in that area who might have been a brother of Elizabeth, but I don't believe he would have been old enough to be her father. I haven't been able to find out anything else about him. It's also possible that Elizabeth VOWELL might have been working for a family (indentured servant??)in Guilford Co. or a nearby county and, thus, was not living with, or even near, her parents (if they were even alive at that time). The apprenticeship record, which names Elizabeth as mother of William 'Oston' VOWELL, shows that he was not apprenticed to John WILEY until around the age of 14 which would have been a long time to stay with his mother since some children were apprenticed at a very young age when the mother could not support the child or had no outside means of support.Perhaps, James LETT, the father, was forced to provide support for several years, or I would think that Elizabeth might have married (except for the fact that she was still referred to in the apprenticeship record as Elizabeth VOWELL).We know that William continued to live in Guilford Co. for many years and married his first and second wives there, and the second was Hannah WILEY.I've tried to determine if there was some connection between Hannah and John WILEY to whom William was apprenticed, but I haven't had much luck with WILEY research.I've "guesstimated" Elizabeth VOWELL'sbirth date as "before 1760" simply because her son, William, would have been born c1774, according to the apprenticeship record.I'd think that she'd have been, at least, 14 when he was born, and probably older than 14.This is quite a mystery, and I'd certainly LOVE to know more about Elizabeth.Any ideas as to how to break through this brick wall??Brenda
