Sarah, although my grandparents were both born in Germany, 1841 and 1849, grandpa Fritz, at 13, joined many uncles who had already emigrated to Iowa and other farming areas. Some of those could quite possibly had offspring that moved on to Oregon. The uncle with whom he lived and grew up, had 9 children; another had 6; another had 5; and I know there were probably many more that I do not have documented. Anyway, we are not really Volkmann's as my great grandmother had a roll in the hay with a Friedrich Wolff, a Aufwärter in the „Walkmühle“ in Plau (= kind of a workman in a mill for fulling clothes), and Fritz was conceived. Therefore, had they married, our surname would be Wolff, but being a bastard child, he carried his mother's name, Volkmann.
