Sharleen Valentine 11/25/08
Sharleen: I have continued research somewhat. The Surname Valentine was probably orginally Italian and dates back to at least around the turn of BC-AD. Some indications were Irish, and others Dutch/English under Volentine. I could not find the name in any of these locations. My niece lived with my mother for some time and said she had told her they had old Italian Blood Line, and was really Welsh. I looked up the name in Wales and sure enough it came up with several namesakes. Could not tie it in directly to Hardy Vollentine that appeared in US in abt. 1760. He was beleived to be the first Valentine/Vollentine/Volentine in US. Cross referencing Valentine/Vollentine the only match I could come up with was Volentine using 1 L. If remember correctly it did use e instead of i.
Hope this is of some help. I was working on other names and have not researched this anymore.
Hardy married a Nancy Johnston, daughter of William Johnston and Sallie Bigford and that goes back a long way.
Check the "Cape Fear River Johnsons by Ben Eulen Johnson" for information on that name.
By the way Bigford name comes out fo Mass.
If I can be of any farther assistance please contact me.
