My husband's family, Viola, came to the United States from Gernsbach, Germany, near Baden-Baden. His great great grandfather was Carl Viola. His great grandfather was Frederick Viola who came to the U.S. from Germany. His grandfather was Edward Nicholas Viola and his father was Edward Christian Viola Sr. married to Immaculate Virgilio. Her family came from Bari, Italy.
I don't have information on Gertrude, (yet), but I hope this information may be useful.
The last Viola still living in Gernsbach that we know of was a retired dentist who was still alive in 1988, I believe.
