I am familiar with what you are describing and I worked on that some years ago,but I think what happened is the persons who contributed that bit of tradition or gossip got confused about who had the Indian ancestry.Ezekiel Bass was part Indian and from a particularly well documented Indian connection mentioned in their Family Bible. All that must be on-line someplace, because they are quite proud of it.The Basses were always shown in the non-White category on those early censuses in NC because of being part Indian, but they were fairly rich people and large slave-owners.They intermarried with the well-to-do families of the county, but there was surely some gossip about them though they were generally well accepted in society.
It seems fairly unlikely Unity was part Indian, because the census takers in that part of NC,who were very conscious of this subject, would probably have shown James and Unity's children in the non-white category, but I could never find them doing so.
Hope this helps--my conclusions,at any rate.Let me know if you find more.
