George Vineyard 1759~1852 Montgomery, Wythe, Pulaski, Smyth Counties VA
George Vineyard 1759~ 1852
George Vineyard is Found on a 1976 Historical Map of Pulaski CountyAround the Peak Creek and Thorn Spring area of Pulaski Town Center cir 1841.
Montgomery CountyChanged boundaries in 1790 to Wythe county and Montgomery County and his Land holdings should have been in Wythe County according to the Map, Yet he is still found Listed in Montgomery County Order Books...until 1838..
A search in Wythe County Records may shed more Light on this individual.
Pulaski County was Formed in 1839.
He did not move.. County Lines were drawn. around him..
It would seem he did move to Smyth Countyon the other side of Wythe county before 1850 as he is listed in the household withson Campbell Vineyard in the 1850 census.
My Interest is in the Vineyard Line...as far as helping establish my case for a James Brown of Bell spring Area. John Tollet, Whosemother wasElizabeth (Preston.?) Vineyard married Mark Tollet, was located on Back Creek area, married Margaret Brown of Bellspring area, sister of James Brown and was a Methodist Church Planter in the country even traveling to Georgia with his Brother in Law Robert Brown to start a Church. It has been suggested that the Catherine, wife of Robert Brown was a Vineyard.
Records found show the following...

Catherine Vineyard released dower. Wit. Leroy Pope, B. Pace JP. (FHL film 209,433)
How if any was John Tollet’smother connected to this George Vineyard Family Line.??
John Tollett’s Sister Elizabeth Tollett Married a John McIntosha collateral line of mine though James Brown, Thomas Brown son of James Brown married a Rachel McIntosh daughter of John and Elizabeth TOLLETT McIntosh, granddaughter of Mark and Elizabeth (Preston?) VINEYARD Tollett.
John Tollett and Thomas Pickens, who married Sarah Brown of Bellspring and James Brown all Lived in Back Creek area of Montgomery County, near the Guthrie’s and Vineyard’s then all three families are in Tazewell at the beginnings of the County there, with James Brown being named with the first Justices of the County.
..anyway I would like to share the notes that I have for those researching this same family and would welcome any information anyone would have connecting any and all of these family that I have mentioned...
I live in Montgomery county and live close to the court house so it is not hard to research this information.. ..
I did this today .. 4-10-2003
Public Record is just that .. PUBLIC RECORD ..
I do not claim to hold any copyright whatsoever to the records.. and my meager attempt at making notes does not constitute a copyright .. use freely .. enjoy and happy hunting....

The Bells
John and Margaret Bell and their family moved to the New River about 1762, and settled on the east side near the Mouth of Little River, John Bell purchased 65 acres from Reuben Ratcliff in 1771, the same tract that had been grantedJohn Miller in 1753.John Bell appears in a list of Tithables of William Ingles in 1770.... The date of death for John Bell is unknown...but in 1816 his heirs are listed in a deed in Montgomery County(Book Fp.225)....Robert Bell and wife Keziah.....
Robert Bell, (SR.) ( 1759~1841) long time resident of Little River Communitymoved to area at about three years of age ( Rev. War Pension record S 8065, National Archives).............
Robert Bell, (SR.) was dividing his estate among his sons Jeremiah,John, Robert, Jr. and William.......
Marriage records of Montgomery County show that Jeremiah Bell son of Robert Bell married Elizabeth Hall, daughter of Asa Hall in 1807. John Bell son of Robert Bell married Polly Vineyard, daughter of George Vineyard in 1818.Robert Bell, jr. married Sarah Vineyard, another daughter of George Vineyard in 1820.William Bell married Nancy Vineyard with Robert Bell and George Vineyard as securitiesNancy may have been another daughter of George Vineyard. .....
....The Bell family graveyard on a ridge south of Dunkard Bottom (now Claytor Lake) is the last resting place for Robert Bell, SR....
John Bell, Son of Robert, SR. remained in the Little River community and died there about 1839.He left no will but his widow, Mary or Polly, is mentioned in Pulaski County deeds during the 1840’s and early 50’s. Most of the Heirs sold their interest in the Place to John Grayson. The Heirs listed were:....

LAND
1795George Vineyard from Thomas Patton, Sr. 150 acres
Thomas Patton, (Sr.) may have been the son of the first Henry Patton of Springfield, and a brother to Henry Patton the soldier of the Revolution.......
Numerous tracts of land were surveyed for Thomas Patton, beginning in 1783 when he had 400 acres known as Sam’s Spring on Peak Creek surveyed. This land adjoined the Thorn Spring survey and 600 additional acres he had surveyed at the same time.In 1787 he had survey for150 acres which was assigned by Henry Patton to whom it had been previously assigned by James Patton/This tract was the lower end of Elk Spring, on a branch of Thorn Spring.Thomas Patton also chose 325 acres adjoining Trollinger’s; this was sold to Christopher Trinkle in 1800.The Elk Spring tract was sold to George Vineyard in 1795, and an additional 40 acres known as the Keeling** or Reeling Spring was surveyed for Patton in 1813.These two tracts adjoined and early selection ofJohn Bingaman, chosen by him in 1754 and which Thomas Patton acquiredin 1800.....
1796George Vineyard, 250 acres Thorn Spring
.....In 1841 two deeds appear for the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which the trustees John Cadall, Andrew Muirhead, James Wall, Sylvanus Foot, Philip L. Woolwine, Crozier Eaton, and Jacob Woolwine received lands from Henry and Elenor H. Patton ( 4 acres) and George Vineyard ( 81 Poles) near the head of Thorn Spring. The deeds state that the ‘trustees shall erect and bring or cause to be erected and built thereon a house or place of worship for the use of the Methodist Episcopal Church.”
This appears to be the beginning of the Thorn Spring Methodist Church. The Campgrounds were in the same Neighborhood. In 1881 J. B. Alexander gave the Colored Methodists 3/4 of an acre for their church out of the Henry Patton Lands he had purchased.
Un chartered TRIGGSVILLE Town
On December 6, 1809, “sundry inhabitants” of Montgomery County Petitioned the Virginia Assembly for the establishment of a town on the land of William McDowell....
... was to encourage a degree in the general scale of mechanism and manufacturers,”....
... The men who signed the petition....( included ) .... George Vineyard, John Vineyard, John Guthrie,....
Althoughthe Assembly approved the development of the town, this community located on the head ofThorn Spring Branch was overshadowed by the development of Newbern at the same time...
New Bern being Located on the Great Road seems to have had the advantage.. and it seems unlikely houses were ever built in TRIGGSVILLE...
When sites for the New Pulaski County Courthouse were being considered in 1839,it is interesting to note that lands on Thorn Spring were mentioned. It is possible that TRIGGSVILLE still had dreams of becoming reality after thirty years on paper and in the minds of sundry in habitants.
.. in 1800 Christopher Trinkle purchased the Sam’s Spring Tract from Thomas Patton....
over the next twelve years, all lands were sold with parts going to George Vineyard, John Trollinger, and Stephen Trinkle......
