Jackson Villiers Tutthill/Tuttle
I have come to a "brick wall" in trying to research my seventh great grandfather, Peter Tuttle, Sr., to St. Mary's County, Maryland, 1680, aboard what appears to read "Ye Shippe Michaut's Connerd". I cannot tie this Peter Tuttle into the Northamptonshire, England line descended from Thomas Totehyll, even though the given names Thomas, James, Peter and John appear very frequently in all the Tuttle lines in the US, usually a giveaway for an ancestor in common... which leads me to a bit of speculation.
The passenger listing for "Ye Shippe Michaut's Connerd" lists Peter "Tootle" and 13 other passengers, all of British or Irish descent. I do know that, once in Maryland, Peter Tuttle and descendants had some sort of association with the Fitzhughs, a family of Irish descent which had attained a level of power and influence, closely connected with Lord Fairfax. That the Fitzhughs were Irish has lead to the speculation that I mentioned... there was a line descended of Thomas Totehyll of Ringstead, Northamptonshire, who ended up in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Ireland, there is a coat of arms registered for Jackson VILLIERS Tutthill, surname apparently later becoming Tuttle.
Is there anyone posting to this board that can shed any light upon this family and any descendants?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
Michael Tuttle
