Annual Report on the names who served in Vietnam

The Department of Defense published the "Official Vietnan War Service Index" in 1984 listing the names of 2,709,018 Americans officially credited with service in-country Vietnam or aboard vessels serving in Vietnamese waters. At the same time DOD reported that its unofficial total of Vietnam servicepersonnel could be as high as 3,004,117. 41,297 names of the latter figure were authorized the Vietnam Service Medal but did not serve in-country or in Vietnamese waters.

The American War Library was established in 1998 to collect the names of all military servicepersonnel from all wars and non-war eras. Over the past 22 years the War Library has confirmed the additional names of 237,411 Americans who served in Vietnam or were authorized the Vietnam War Service Medal (or Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal-Vietnam). The search for the missing 57,688 names will painstakingly continue until all Vietnam War names are confirmed.
