I don't remember anything about rats in the outhouses & the barrels definitely were not "buried". Each morning someone (a lower four grade airman, like me) had the detail of "burning the barrels". Each of the six were dragged away from outhouse & replaced with ones from yesterday. Then a gallon or so of diesel fuel was added & barrels set on fire - wonderful smell! By the time I left, some of the "permanent buildings" actually had indoor plumbing, but not in our suadron area.
