I hope that this isn't to late for your project. This is my prospective. I went to Vietnam when I was 19 in Sept 1967 during the buildup. My impression of what we were doing there was helping to keep the communists from overrunning the South Vietnamese. There was a "Domino" theory that went that as each country fell to the communists they, the communists, would be emboldened to attack another country and we the Americans leader of the free world must stop the communists. I willingly went to VN sort of as a crusader to stop the communist menace (remember I was 19). When I got to VN I soon developed an impression that the Vietnamese population, most of which was very poor, could care less who ruled them. They sort of felt that both sides were going to exploit them. When I came home I looked at the rhetoric of the government, both democrat and republican, as a bunch of propaganda. The government seemed to be willing to tell the public anything they thought the public would buy. The public was getting suspicious though and eventually turned against the war and unfortunately blamed the war on the soldiers, sailors, and airmen that were doing the fighting. Why did we fight. As I said we were told to stop the commies, later I'm not sure they really had a reason. It was a frustrating war and destroyed a lot of lives for no reason. Hope this helped some
