origin of Vidal name

I started the Vidal search back in September 98 asking about the origins of the name.

Just recently I met a Frenchman who is firmly convinced Vidal is a French name. (Gore Vidal, the famous writer who was related to Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, claims French ancestry.

Just wondering if anyone out there can shed light on the name Vidal. My who is a Vidal was born in the Azores Islands, a Portuguese territory.
