Are you interested in tracing your VICK roots with DNA? If you are we have a project at 23andMe (www.23andMe.com) to use DNA to identify shared ancestry. In the past we have been limited to using Y-DNA in researching our patrilineal line (father’s father’s fathers…) and mitochondrial DNA to trace our matrilineal line (mother’s mother’s mother’s…). Since women don’t have Y-DNA they cannot directly trace their patrilineal line. While tracing our patrilineal and matrilineal lines is important, we have many other lines (e.g. our mother’s father’s line, our father’s mother’s line, etc.). Dr. Ann Turner, co-author of “Trace Your Roots with DNA” said recently “Genetic genealogists just aren't dialed in to thinking about all the ‘other’ ancestral lines. In order to introduce and (hopefully!) demonstrate the utility of autosomal testing for finding connections between people, [23andMe] discounts were offered to a few project administrators...this would open up projects to people who lack a straight maternal or paternal line. Nothing like this has ever been attempted before, so we are just beginning to explore the potential. It will also be important to understand the limitations. If this pans out, it means that projects (surname/geographical/ethnic) don't need to confine themselves to the straight paternal or maternal lines, but they can include people whose ancestry zigzags back and forth between males and females.” If you are interested in testing for shared VICK ancestors, please let me know. I am one of the project administrators who have codes for a substantial discount on testing at 23andMe. I would love to compare results to see what we learn. Contact me if you are interested in learning more. 23andMe asked me not to publish the discount on a public forum, but I can tell you the price if you e-mail me privately at jameslvick@yahoo.com and agree not to post or publish the discounted price. There are restrictions. The test must be ordered by September 30, 2009, and the saliva sample must be returned to the lab by October 30, 2009. Regards, Larry Notify Administrator about this message?
