Barbara,

Have you considered that he may have been the John D. VICK, born abt 1897 that was a soldier in the U.S. Army according to the 1930 U.S. Census of Elizabeth City, Chesapeake, VA? He was born in NC and single. A John D. VICK, born abt 1897 in NC appears as the son of Wiley J. VICK on the 1900 U.S. Census of Coopers, Nash Co., NC.

The fact that his cemetery record says "no relatives located" makes me wonder if he was from somewhere other than Hale Co. According to the same record he had an obituary, so you might get a copy and see if there are any clues in it. You could also check to see if Lemons funeral home has any other information.
