Frederick Vietor came from Bremen, Germany in 1828.Where he found work in the establishment of Charles Graebe at 94 Pearl St in NYC.In 1834 Mr. Vietor became a partner of Mr. graebe at 155 Pearl St.and the firm continued as Graebe and Vietor until Graebe's death in 1842.
Immediately thereafter Vietor formed a partnership with his cousin Thomas Achelis, who had come to the US from Bremen in 1834, and who had been conducting an importing business of his own.Under the name of Fred'k Vietor and Achelis, they leased the offices at 9 South William St.In 1852, they moved to 50 Broad St.Later they moved to duane st. in 1860, from 1875 -1910 they were located at 66 Leonard St (in Brooklyn Heights). In 1900 the silk departments were located at 96 Spring St.The main office was located at 50 Union Square in 1910, and in 1913 it was moved again, together with the silk departments to 38 E. 25th St.It was located there in 1924, when a 300-year centenary book memorial colume about the New York City was published, fromwhich the above is derived.
The company moved again to 2 Park Ave at some point thereafter. In 1932 they shifted from being middlemen for textile distribution, and refocused on banking and credit instead. They also changed the name of the firm which became "Commercial Factors Inc."Members of the Vietor, Achelis, and Smidt families worked for this firm.Other families involved in similar work in NYC were the Spies, Flietmann, Dommerich, and Caesar families.
Frederick Vietor and Thomas Achelis married two sisters,Marie and Julie Rosine Hütterott, both from Bremen.Marie Hütterott Vietor was born in Sept. 27 1819, and died in 1903.She had a number of children, for whom I am still seeking the information. Her sister Julie Rosie Achelis had a daughter Anna who married Frederick George Vietor.I have records for the descendents of Anna, published by the late Fred Achelis on "The Achelis Family in America", available through the Family History Center:
www.familysearch.org.
The genealogical organization "Die Maus", in Bremen has assembled a large database of info on Vietors in Bremen. Here's the direct link, though it is down at the moment.

Additionally, I have started a Yahoo group for members of the families of Frederick Vietor and Thomas Achelis:

I do hope this info is helpful to other Vietors. It may be that even distant Vietor relatives from germany passed through NYC and worked for this firm in some capacity.
