Both died before their children were raised. So your ancestor Richard more then likely lived with people the courts placed him in. This seem to happen a lot in the Vest family. His birth was a mystery to me for a long time but my mother, Viola Vest Ralston said, her brother Richard was named after grandpa, Zerry Vest's brother, Richard. My grand-father Zerry Vest's first wife died leaving him with four children. He could not work and take care of twin daughter's so he signed them over to his dead wife's family. His boys lived with him awhile and then went to live with other family members. When he married my grandmother she was also a widow with children. He never was able to get his daughters back but his son's did live with him untill he died in 1922. I sent to you a file on Vest from Zerrobable and Christina forward three generations.
