It was great to hear from you!I had completely forgotten about posting that comment on the Vessels Genforum.
Since I posted, I found the records of the Sussex County Orphan's Court regarding the children of John Vessels:the said John Vessels left to survive him seven children, to wit William Vessels, Elizabeth married to Perry Prettyman, Mary married to John Burton, Ann married to David Burton, Nathaniel Vessels aged about 14 years, Hetty Vessels aged about 12 years and Lydia since deceased intestate & without issue
It looks like James was in Belmont County when John Vessels died in 1831.Actually, I think James might be a nephew instead of a son, because he is not named as one of John's seven surviving children at his death in 1831.Even if he were no longer living in the County, he would have still been named as an heir. When Penelope Vessels' father, William Fisher, died, the estate was split up among his minor children, one of which was a son, Derrickson.Apparently Derrickson took off for parts unknown, because there was additional court papers filed to split up his share of William Fisher's estate amongst his surviving siblings at a later date with the notation that Derrickson had been gone from the county for over 12 years and had not been heard from in that period of time. When David & Ann Burton moved to Belmont County, OH, they were still mentioned in estate records and deeds as living in Belmont County, OH.So I have to think that if James had been a son of John Vessels, he would have been mentioned as one of his chilldren in the Orphans' Court records pertaining to the division of his estate. When property was involved, all heirs were named regardless of where they were living at the time. Also, unless he was born before April 1800, it would not have been possible for him to be a son of John and Penelope, as William F Vessels was born 1 Jan 1801.
There was a Priscilla Vessels living in Sussex County, DE and I believe she was the widow of a James Vessels, so I'm wondering if they were the parents of those other Vessels sons you mentioned.Or perhaps they were the sons of Jabez Vessels and Elizabeth Coulter who were married in 1796.
I am kind of stumped on John's parents. He just kind of pops up in Sussex County, DE.He seems to be a contemporary of Jabez Vessels & Priscilla Vessels, the widow of James, so I'm thinking they were 3 brothers.Just not sure where they came from before they showed up in Sussex County--maybe Accomac County?Haven't had the opportunity to dig deeper into this to see if there is a connection between these 3 and between them and the Wessels in Accomac Co, VA.Something that I'll need to see if I can find any records to try and put together the pieces and figure it out.
