GILES Vermillion - New Information?

Hello,

My mother's mother was Edith Pauline Vermillion, in a direct line from Giles Vermillion. My mother told me all my life, that our Vermillion line came from the old name of Vermilius, from Italy, and that there were Vermillions also in Switzerland.

I only this year began studying my ancestry. From Google, I found this forum, and the discussions about Giles Vermillion. I am especially interested in all of the research that Doug Vermillion has done regarding Giles. Thank you so much, Doug!

But I also looked up 'Vermilius', which my mother had always told me about, and told me came from Italy. Has anyone looked into this? There was a famous reformer, Peter Martyr Vermigli from Italy who fled to Switzerland and also worked in England. (Vermigli pronounced in Italian sounds like Vermilyi or Vermillyi.) It could be, that in German - in Zurich where he taught - Vermigli was most easily pronounced as Vermilius, so he became known as Vermilius to those speaking German. He married, and had a son. When he moved to England from Switzerland for a while to teach at Oxford, he had a son there. His wife died in England, and after her death, Peter Martyr had to again flee for his life back to Switzerland, when Catholic Mary I of England came to power. His son Jean went to the Netherlands for safety, and his name was known in Holland as Vermilye - same name, but known differently whether in Italian, German, English or Dutch. Jean's son then came to America from the Netherlands.

But I wonder if Peter Martyr Vermigli had some other children, and if some of them remained in the British Isles, and if from them came our Giles Vermillion?

This is the line that I am now pursuing.

Sincerely,

Julie Sommerkamp Pence (daughter of Jean Childers Sommerkamp, daughter of Edith Pauline Vermillion Childers)
