Elizabeth de Vere did indeed marry Sir Anthony Wingfield. She was the daughter of George de Vere and Margaret Stafford.George was the third son of John de Vere, the 12th Earl of Oxford. The 12th Earl, along with his eldest son Aubrey, supported Henry VI and the Lancastrians.Unhappily, following the accession of Edward IV, the 12th earl and his son were summarily beheaded at the Tower of London in 1461.The second son of the 12th Earl, John, became the 13th Earl of Oxford upon restoration of the family's title and honors. The 13th Earl died without issue, so the title reverted to the eldest son of George de Vere, who was also named John and who became the 14th Earl. Thus, to answer your initial question, yes, Elizabeth de Vere was the sister of the 14th Earl of Oxford.Of course, it is also true that Elizabeth de Vere was a direct descendant of the prior Earls of Oxford before her father, George. There are many sources for this, but perhaps the most accessible are: (i) David Faris, "Plantagent Ancestry of Seventeenth Century Colonists," (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1996), p. 126; and (ii) Sir Bernard Burke, "A Genealogical History of the Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited and Extinct Peerages of the British Empire," (London, 1883; reprint, Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1996), pp. 549-552.
Incidentally, both George de Vere and Anthony Wingfield were direct descendants of Edward I, who was, of course, a direct descendant of Charlamagne. How do you descend from Elizabeth de Vere and Anthony Wingfield?I descend from these two through Capt. Francis Dade of Virginia.
