I heard this from my Grandfather who had it form his mother Mary Ursula Dever. The Vere line was originally Norman nobility (a prominent Duke)and dates back to legendary times where fact and fiction is difficult to separate. some trace this line back to ancient Troy through Arenator. The line that came to the USA that I am descended from came to England during the Norman conquest and was given titles there. A scion of the family chose the "wrong side" in a political dispute and fled to Scotland where they were given titles there. Most likely the generic noble title for these folks was "count". In any case, once again a scion of the family fell on hard times and came to the USA where I believe you have our Richard Wilmont Dever.
