Hi Chris! I was born in Bolton, and all my family were from Bolton/Preston/Salford; but I have been in Edinburgh for the last 25 years. I have only ditant relations in Bolton - Yates not Vere.
My mother's grandfather was Ellen Vere, who married Joseph German from Bolton. He abandoned her (his wife) and went to New Zealand (Auckland), she died, and my mother was brought up by her grandpaprents (Yates). All contact with the German family (and thus the Vere's presumably) was lost. I have only found out about them in the last couple of years. All I have is:

*Joseph Vere (b. Pendleton, Salford ca.1834, alive 1881 as callendarer at cotton bleach works)
m. Sarah Jane Openshaw (17 June 1855, Tong, Bolton; “Betsy” in 1881 census)
       1. Richard (b. 1858 – m. in 1881 census)
       2. *Ellen (b. 1862)

*Ellen Vere (b. Tong with Haulgh, Bolton 22 Aug.1862, alive 1901 as shopkeeper)
m. Robert German (b. Bolton 18 Sept. 1861) April/June 1886
       1. *Joseph German (b. 1887) My maternal grandfather.

Can you please fill in any details. In theory, someone cound know what happened to Joseph German in NZ (he remarried and was divorced in 1929; no children)

All the best Peter
