Sorry, but your statement that no official claims to the earldom of Oxford have been made in 280 years is not correct.
In 1909, Sir John James Hugh Henry Stewart Henry, Duke of Atholl, etc., filed a petition in the House of Lords seeking a determination that he was entitled to the earldom. His claim, which was well presented by his solicitors, emanates from his lineal descent from John DeVere, 14th Earl of Oxford. The 14th Earl left three co-heirs, a nephew (son of his deceased sister, Dorothy), his sister Elizabeth, wife of Sir Anthony Wingfield, K.G. (from whom I descend), and his sister Ursula, wife of Sir Edward Knightley (through whom the Duke of Atholl descended).Although his descent was undisputed, the Duke lost (among other things, the earldom had been in abeyance too long).I have a numbered duplicate of the original petition and appendix presented to the House of Lords, and I would be happy to answer any questions regarding it.
