Hi Daniel, I do not have any information on your direct Pardo ancestors, but I do want to share the following with you. One of my ancestors was Gregoria Pardo. She was married to Cruz Leal, my oldest known paternal ancestor. They had 7 children together (4 daughters and 3 sons). Based on census information, I know that she was born between 1814 and 1843, probably in the region of the small town of Ubaque, South East of Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. I do not have any other familial information on her. I do know that she lived as a farmer in what was probably a rural community. I also know that she was Roman Catholic. I expect that your Pardo line is Jewish (the name Isaac, your family branch in Curacao and the fact that the name Pardo is a well known Sephardim name suggest so). I have reasons to believe that my paternal ancestors were Sephardim and that they converted to Christianity – probably by force – in the late 15th century in Spain. One of my theories is that my ancestors Cruz Leal and Gregoria Pardo belonged to a Crypto Jewish community. Crypto Jewish communities are known to have existed in Colombia, but not in region where my ancestors lived (they existed in Bogotá, but especially in Antioquia, the province North West of Bogotá). I also know that Jews settled on the Caribbean coast of Colombia from the Dutch Antilles as traders when freedom of religion was introduced in Colombia in the 19th century. You mention that descendants of your Pardo branch settled in Colombia. When did they settle there, where did they come from and when did this take place? I am curious to learn of course whether Gregoria Pardo would be related to your Pardo branch in any way. I do not expect so, at least not during the last 2 to 3 hundreds of years, now that I expect that your relatively recent ancestors were probably involved in trading in Venezuela, whereas Gregoria Pardo and her direct ancestors were probably (also) farmers living in a rural area. You mention that your ancestors first settled in Venezuela from Hamburg in Germany. Again, assuming that your ancestors were Sephardim, I expect that your ancestors settled in Hamburg from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and that your more distant ancestors settled in Amsterdam coming from Spain. Is my assumption correct? How far back in time does your paper trail reach? Do you have any idea where in Spain your ancestors lived originally? I am curious because I expect that your Pardo branch remained loyal to the Jewish faith and left Spain for that reason, whereas my Pardo ancestors converted to Christianity and remained in Spain from where they most likely migrated to Colombia. FYI, I have found self-identified descendants of Jewish Pardo’s living in Spain and I have exchanged emails with them. If you would like to get in touch with them, please let me know. Kind regards, Oscar Leal Amsterdam, the Netherlands PS. If you have links to Amsterdam and are having trouble researching this link, let me know, maybe I can help. I live in Amsterdam.
