Lawyer, of Prince Edward and Mecklenburg counties, Va., who moved to
Granville County, N.C., in 1829, and became active in the Democratic Party,
serving as U.S. Representative, 1847-1853.
Letters to Venable from other Democrats on party and public affairs,
including ten from W. W. Holden; from constituents concerning patronage and
local problems; from U.S. officials; and from acquaintances in other
states.Later correspondence discusses an unexplained enmity between
Venable and Holden which led to Venable's defeat for renomination. Only a
few letters are written by Venable or pertain to his private life.
