Sorry Salvador, but the origin of all the Velez in America is not limited to a single
branch. There are many, many local descendents from Velez's from different parts of Spain that came many years later
than Cortes.
The origin of the surname is associated with the particle 'ez' (meaning 'son of'):
Rodriguez (son of Rodrigo)
Gonzalez (son of Gonzalo)
Velez (son of Velo - a popular Visigode name)
