MY Great Grandfather, Walter Hodges, also had an Uncle who was named after Matthew Vassar. His name was Matthew Vassar Selkirk. His (and my GG Grandmother Portia Selkirk's) Grandmother was Jemima (Jenny)Vassar,Matthew Vassar's Older sister. They were from Lake county,IL. and spent most of their lives in South Haven MI. I would assume They were Cousin's of your G Grandfather's Uncle
